Basking Shark Time, Newquay

Sat 8th June 2013 - Sun 9th June 2013

Trip Report

Fisherman fisherman, home from the sea, do you have a lobster, you can sell to me ........ The advance party of Somerset Divers arrived in Newquay on Friday afternoon in time to take part in the release of hundreds and hundreds of tiny baby lobsters, to their new ocean view homes for the next stage of their development. The programme, run by The National Lobster Hatchery (www.nationallobsterhatchery.co.uk) and undertaken with Atlantic divers was very successful and helps with the sustainability of the lobster population. This is Just as well, since lobster is of course a very popular a dish on many menus and in fact a sample was enjoyed by Somerset Divers on the first night of our stay.
The whole weekend has been brilliant in every sense, four great dives in addition to the lobster release, all with good vis and lots to see topped off with calm seas and fantastic weather. The second dive on day one was very popular as was the wreck dive at about 30 meters on day two. A sighting and photo of a species of crayfish was reported contributing to the data for the local biodiversity action plan, which is always pleasing and just goes to prove you never know what you are going to find! Dolphins joined the boat on the last journey back to the harbour and in the harbour two large seals obligingly put on quite a show. Unfortunately no Basking sharks could be found on this occasion but we will defiantly be going back to search again. Chris and Annabelle at Atlantic Divers are superb hosts and made the stay and the diving most comfortable and well organised from start to finish, so many thanks to both of them. Look out for our resident film star on any local Newquay news (the lobster release was recorded... but no points for guessing who!) Our dive masters did a grand job so many thanks to them, a great weekend, the diving, the accommodation, the BBQs, the homemade cakes and of course the great company.

Trip Details

Again this year the trip to Atlantic Divers at Newquay could be a bit special, this is the peak time for basking sharks coming up passed the Cornish Coast. Last year we had everything right from sun to flat calm seas, unfortunately no baskers. Last year’s trip reporthttp://www.somersetdivers.co.uk/trips/75-basking%20shark%20time.htm

Chris has kindly kept the price the same as last year.

So the plan is to travel down on the friday for B&B with Atlantic Divers, for those who have been before you will know they have excellent B&B in 2 bunkhouse chalets. Up early saturday for 2 dives on their superb catamaran, usually a wreck and drift dives, I would love to go back and dive the Train Wreck just outside of St Ives, but obviously weather depended, lunch is supplied. Back for B&B and no doubt a couple of beers and then the same again on sunday and home.

Now if we get lucky the basking sharks will be coming by, so the diving plans will change and it will be off to snorkel with the giants. Travel back sunday evening.
You will need to be Advanced Open Water with 2 tanks and DSMB.

Air is available on site.
