Dive with the Seals, Lundy

Sun 22nd July 2012

Trip Report

Summer arrived today thank goodness, we arrived in Ilfracombe to blue skies and a flat sea. Andy kindly gave us Obsession 2 for the day. Breakfast at Adeles and out of the harbour for 9, just over an hour of early morning sun and we arrive at the island to find just a few seals in the bay. All kitted up and in we go, it was actually nice to get in the water to cool off.

The seals were there and the viz was about 4m, a close encounter for just one diver with their fins being nibbled but the seals did not want to play

So back to the boat and a cuppa in the sun with some superb home baked cake from Sue. The seals then started turning up in numbers, we think they all popped out for a late breakfast and then came back in. So in for dive 2, but again they did not want to play, they were staying their distance and following us around. Most of the seals were sat out on the rocks just basking in the sun.

But a beautiful day in the sun and time to head for home. Now a sight of gannets diving in feeding ahead usually mean dolphins, so we headed towards them and we were not dissappointed. A huge pod of dolpins with some really small babies bowriding the boat, a brilliant sight. A superb cruise back in the sun finished by a double scoop of icecream with cream in a waffle cone. Got to love the British seaside on a good summers day.

Trip Details

Back again for a real favourite, 2 dives with the seals out at Lundy Island. We will be leaving Ilfracombe at about 9am, 1 1/2hours trip out there onboard Obsession 1. When we find the seals we will kit up and get in to play. Remember these are wild animals and they choose whether they want to come and nibble your fins. Last year we were treated not only to plenty of interaction with the seals, but dolphins bow riding the boat and a whale passing in the distance.

You will need to be an Open Water Diver with 2 tanks and DSMB. The diving is easy but I will be onboard with another Instructor so if you want a guided dive, no problem and no extra charge.
