Dive with the seals, Lundy Island

Fri 10th June 2011

Trip Report

The first trip of the year to Lundy, we all met up at Adele's cafe, Ilfracombe harbour for the obligatory big breakfast, then Russ and I had a bit of a workout, loading a boat at low tide up and down 30 odd steps, not a good plan. Never mind all on board and out we go.

Now it didn't seem too rough but Nathan went a very strange grey green colour and we had only just left the harbour. An hour later and we were treated to a pod of dolphins around the boat, bowriding and jumping out of the water. Lundy now very close when we got buzzed by the RAF, you could see the pilot smiling as he came so close and scared the whotsit out of most of us !!

In the shelter of the island and Nathan seemed happier and there in the water the seals were waiting for us. Into Gannets Bay and as we were kitting up the seals were lining up by the boat.

In for the first dive and in no time the seals were round us, a little nervous at first but then they came right up close, Andrea experienced her first seal kiss on her mask, the seals were even letting us stroke them. The bull seals usually a bit stand offish were doing the same. Cameras clicking away.

Back on the boat and everyone had experienced some really close up seals. Unfortunately the rain then started, but nice muffins Laura.

Back in for dive 2 but the viz was definitely reduced due to the rain and the seals didn't seem as excited to see us, probably bored with us. The bulls had different ideas now and were chasing the females around. Still good close up encounters and more photos. Back on board and everyone well pleased with the adventure, a first for most diving with the Lundy seals. The wind had by now dropped and the rain stopped and we were treated to an excellent ride back. Yet again many thanks to Andy and Obsession truly brilliant.
