Dive with the seals, Lundy Island

Fri 2nd September 2011

Trip Report

The final trip of the year to Lundy and autumn is on its way, on the way to Ilfracombe there was a thick mist all the way. Usual breakfast at Adele's Cafe and off to load Obsession. Halfway to Lundy and the mist started to lift and the blue sky came through.

At the Island and a few seals in the water on a very high spring tide. In we go and straight away whilst Alan, on his very first Lundy dive, was trying to descend we were joined by a seal, not that he saw it. Viz was a bit reduced to about 8m. It didn't take long for the seals to buzz everyone and a few people having their fins chewed. Definitely not as playful but close up encounters all round. Out for lunch in the sun and then back for dive 2. Well I think the seals had had enough, they were sat out on the rocks basking in the sun. One appeared for a brief glimpse for everyone but that was it. On the way back a stunning blue lobster, a first sighting for Chris, shame it's a no take zone.

Back on board and a superb ride back with the sun out, blue sky and a flat sea. Now the trouble with spring tides is they don't half get low and shifting all that kit up all those steps to the top was not fun.

My thanks to everyone for a pleasant day out and to Andy and the crews of Obsessions for the trips all year, look forward to 2012.

Trip Details

2 dives with the seals out on Lundy Island aboard Obsession 2, the catamaran with tail lift out of Ilfracombe.

There will be 2 dives with the seals on the Island
You will need to be an Open Water Diver or equivalent, with 2 tanks and DSMB. There are 14 available places. Times to be arranged.

I will be on the boat with another instructor, so if you want an accompanied dive, no problem and no extra charge.

This is a great dive for the newly qualified diver or the experienced one who love the interaction with the seals.
