Lundy - unexpected opportunity, Lundy Island

Mon 3rd May 2010

Trip Report

We all met up on the Quay at Ilfracombe on a sunny but rather chilly morning, the usual breakfast stored away. Loaded the boat and of out the harbour. Somerset Divers had been joined by the Northern crew once again, Neil, Phil, Tony, Michelle and Seb. Now Seb having stepped onto the boat whilst it was still moored up went a very pale colour, by the time we left the harbour he was unfortunately saying hello to that all mate Hueie.

A rather rough trip out there, but the sun was shining away and Lundy Island looked as brilliant as ever. A quick check of the Island and all appeared too rough with the Northerly wind affecting both sides, so we had to settle for the bottom end. Seb tried valiantly to kit up, but I've seen healthier looking corpses, he made the right decision and did not get in. On entering the water there was a very heavy plankton bloom and after 20 minutes most people were ending the dive.

Obsession 2 was also out diving the Island with a group from the Cotswolds and they had the same idea and we met up for a very pleasant lunch in the sun. With the tide change and the wind moving slightly round we were able to dive the eastern side of the Island and with a few seals getting nosey around the boat we were in. Seb had now recovered and looked slightly healthier than some of the road kill we had seen on the motorway on the way down and he kitted up for the dive. But with the viz still poor and the seals really not keen to come in close we finished the dives.

My thanks to everyone who came out for a very pleasant day, Andy and young Master Bengey for an excellent boat and service, Sue who managed to bring enough food for the whole boat, Lucy, Chris, Mike, The Northern crowd, and to Gary and Russ for their work.

Trip Details

Due to a cancellation I have been offered the boat Obssession, from Ilfracombe, for a trip out to Lundy to dive with the seals. This is on the Bank Holiday Monday, approx leave the harbour at 9am, return about 5pm, final times will be given nearer the date. This has proved very popular so if you want a place be quick.

The trip is suitable for Open Water divers or above, you will need 2 tanks and a DSMB. I will be on board with another member of staff, so if you want a guided dive there is no extra charge.
